Bioassay Testing Services

Through its laboratories in New Jersey, PBL Biomedical Laboratories offers bioassay testing services for interferons. PBL's bioassays are cytopathic effect inhibition assays. In these antiviral assays, one unit is defines as the quantity of interferon required per milliliter to produce a cytopathic effect of 50%. The assay system, specifically the cell and virus types, varies depending on the interferon to be analyzed. For example, human interferon alpha bioactivity is measured on bovine MDBK cells or human cells H226 with vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV). All of the standards used in our bioassays have been calibrated to the International Reference Standards such as those outlined by the National Institutes of Health [Pestka,S. (1986) Methods in Enzymology, 119, 14-23] and the World Health Organization.
